Don’t become a drowning statistic – wise up to water safety on the farm with new FARM SAFETY LEAFLET

Irish Water Safety would like to remind farmers of the high risk to children and adults from falling in to water (e.g. barrels and slurry tanks). Vigilant precautions are necessary to prevent a tragic accident.
Irish Water Safety, the statutory body established to promote water safety in Ireland has launched a new publication to help prevent drownings and stay safe around water on the farm. Sponsored by FBD Insurance, the leaflet gives essential advice for those living on or visiting farms.
Launching the publication, Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan TD welcomed the safety initiative. “Farm pools, lakes, ponds, and beaches can be exciting for visitors but water also can be lethal for children and adults if they don't take the proper precautions. I am delighted to launch this Water Safety on the Farm leaflet for Irish Water Safety, which I am certain will help raise awareness and reduce drownings.”
The comfort and enjoyment of visiting family and friends on farms can mask hidden dangers, especially for children. Children are naturally curious about water and each year, too many young children are involved in preventable aquatic injuries. According to the World Health Organisation drowning is the primary cause of death in children.
Farmers are reminded that small children may get too close to the water's edge, lose their balance in the soft earth, and drown in the shallow water. Other children may wade into shallow water and fall into deep holes.
Winter drowning victims fall through thin ice and may not be capable of pulling themselves to safety. In these incidents, hypothermia is an immediate problem and must be treated appropriately.

01 Farm Ponds are often out of view of the house, so always have an adult with you when you are feeding the ducks or playing

02 Farm Slurry pits are not solid enough to stand on. You would quickly sink

    03_reeds.jpg

03 Reeds and grass often obscure the edge of the pond

04 The banks of a pond may be weak and give way under your weight

05 Holes or drains left exposed after building work
    should be closed

06 Keep away from uncovered water barrels

    07_holes.jpg

07 You cannot tell how deep a hole is if it is water filled

08 Do not play near the edge of riverbanks- it can
    crumble away suddenly
